Peony Cyanotypes with Xochiyollotl

Learn how to harness the sun to create art in this Cyanotype printmaking workshop!

Homer artist Xochiyollotl will teach participants about the magical and ethereal process of making cyanotypes. Using pressed flora, paper cut outs, and/or photo negatives, participants will create their own compositions on top of cyano-paper, before exposing their prints to sunlight. Participants will have the opportunity to got through the process at least 3 times to perfect the skill, creating three unique cyanotype prints.

Sunday July 14th from 10am – 1 pm

Downstairs in the HCOA Studio

*All materials will be provided but feel free to bring in some flowers or foliage from your own garden to incorporate into you prints!

**Optional Additional Take-Home Project: Pick up a picture frame or two from a thrift store and try out some other sun printing solutions to develop and process at your house. (see anthotype images below)

About the Instructor:

Xochiyollotl (so-chee- yo-low-tull) is a multi media artist working in Homer. She graduated from UAF in 2022 with an MFA in Ceramics. She enjoys experimenting with different materials and creating multi-layered mixed media artwork. She was hired at HCOA in May of 2023 and is ecstatic to be a part of the lively Homer arts community.

Anthotypes:

Anthotypes and Cyanotypes are both ways of printing onto paper using light exposure. While they share the same process, that’s where their similarities end. Cyanotypes use a photosensitive chemical solution to create prints within a matter of minutes. Anthotypes create images using natural photosensitive extracts from plants materials like coffee (right), spinach, beet juice, or turmeric (left), and are exposed for hours or days at a time. The biggest difference these processes have is how they react to exposure. Notice an the Cyanotypes, the part that is exposed to light, the areas where no plants cover the paper, turns dark, and on the Anthotype, the part that isn’t exposed to light, the areas where plants cover the paper, is what turns dark.
