Amy Komar is an Alaska-based contemporary artist known for her vibrant abstract paintings, meditative dotwork, and intricate geometric patterns applied to a variety of surfaces such as claybord panels, stone, and metal. Her work is influenced by motherhood, memory and spirituality; often transforming everyday objects into reflective pieces that explore connection, healing, and personal history.

This is a spectrum of photography from nearly a decade of practice in Nalanda Miksang Contemplative Photography. Each photo is a pure moment, a flash of my perception, a way of seeing the world.

Nalanda Miksang literally translates in Tibetan to Good Eye. It is a practice of seeing the world as it is. It is a practice I hope to bring to Homer as a teacher myself after I finish my teacher training with renowned teachers Miriam Hall and John McQuade.

I hope my offering of work is more than beautiful for you to witness; I hope it tastes and feels good and makes you giggle.

These paintings are from my At the Edge of All We Have Built series. In which I am exploring  these two concepts of time: One) Chronos time, which refers to seconds and minutes—it’s what we use when we say the meeting begins at 11:00am or the movie starts at 7:30pm. And the other is kairos time. The definition of kairos is “a time when conditions are right for the accomplishment of a crucial action; the opportune and decisive moment.”

Kairos time is where all the characters in this series find themselves, a time of shifting into direct awareness of that which is bigger than themselves that produces solemn awe—signaling that the “conditions are right,” that this is “the opportune and decisive moment.”

Jenna Gerrety is a local fiber artist / painter who graduated from University of Alaska, Anchorage with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2017. Constantly crafting, you will find her building props and painting sets for Pier One, working in the HCOA office, making music, pulling shots at Coops, and exploring Alaska with her partner. She has a healthy obsession with mushrooms and delights in whimsy and contradictions, hoping her work will inspire others to find a little fantasy in their day to day lives.
