Ceramic Mosaics with Xochiyollotl

In this two day workshop you will learn to design and make your own hand cut ceramic tiles before assembling them into your own 5×7 Mosaic wall hanging.

Saturday, December 9th AND 16th 5:30-8:00 PM

All Materials Provided: Clay, Glazes, Cutting and texture tools, Grout, 5×7 Block of Wood.

On day one:

You will draw a design or composition you’re interested in and once you’re happy with your design, you will transfer that image onto a slab of clay and cut out the pieces to make your mosaic. Using carving tools and handbuilding techniques, you will add texture or 3D elements into your image.

Once you’re happy with the way your mosaic is looking, you will  paint your pieces with stroke and coat glazes and finish them off so they’re ready to get fired in the kiln.

Day Two:

When you come back on Day 2, your mosaic pieces will be fired and ready to assemble. After securing the pieces to a block of wood, you will learn how to mix, apply, and clean up grout. Once clean you’ll be left with a one of kind ceramic mosaic, a perfect holiday gift for yourself or someone you know.

Xochiyollotl (soh-cheel) has been a ceramics artist for over 10 years. She attended Humboldt State University where she was a studio assistant and kiln tech for 2 years while working toward her BA in Ceramics. She graduated in 2018 with honors and received the Ceramic Artist of the Year Award. She then attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks where she taught beginning ceramics as a TA for 3 years while receiving her MFA with a concentration in Ceramics and Painting. Xochitl moved to Homer in May of 2023 and hopes to teach a number of workshops at HCOA to share her ceramic knowledge with her new community.
