Fireweed Profusion

“Fireweed is Alaska’s timepiece and my favorite flower when it paints the fields with pink. Painting is my therapy. I lose track of time and place with the interaction of watercolor and paper. It’s a bonus if I create something pleasing to others. I began as an art major at college but turned to the more “practical” field of business. Marriage to a wildlife refuge manager brought me to Alaska in 1976 where I am constantly inspired by its beauty. During my business career, I took art classes when I could. Halibut Cove artist, Diana Tillion, introduced me to watercolor at the Kachemak Bay Campus, and I loved it. Upon retirement, I joined the Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society, mentored by Paula Dickey. I started selling a few paintings, and my hobby became a part-time career. ”

“I love experimenting with rich watercolor paints and try to learn new techniques as much as possible. Being close to the ocean in Homer inspires me to paint undersea creatures like this octopus.”

Oil Paint and Cold Wax

“I am a Homer artist and have been working in oil and cold wax for several years. I love the freedom this medium gives me. It allows me to be more creative than if I was working on a representational piece. I I love to use various other mediums with the oil and cold wax, including graphite, ink, and pastels.; and mark making and stenciling always adds fun to the process. And if you don’t like what you do, you can always cover over it with more oil and cold wax.”
