Artability

Artability is a group of the TRAILS program at the Independent Living Center. The TRAILS program promotes fun, safe, adaptive recreation opportunities for people of all abilities.

Artability is a participant driven art group that empowers individuals by increasing self-confidence and assisting participants to fully realize their capabilities through art. Artability fosters connections in the classroom and to the community. The group is free to all ages and abilities thanks in part to Homer Art and Frame held every Fridays 11:30-1:30.

My artistic goal is to brighten someone’s day. That’s why I can often be seen entertaining folks at the Homer Senior Center or on the stage in Pier One Theatre Productions. I grew up visiting the Art Museums of New York, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. It was on a class trip that I was mesmerized by Joan of Arc by Jules Bastien-Lepage. I just sat on the bench in front of it and stared. The Homer Spit is where I go when I need to decompress as a caregiver. I can go over and over again. It’s different and beautiful every time…even when the sea is angry and the sky is bleak. It is my hope that someone can pop this painting on the wall or sit it on a desk and have a quiet moment.

It is audacious to try to represent the magnitude of Alaska, but I try to capture the spirit and essence
through its birds, flowers, and landscapes with simple powerful Chinese spontaneous strokes I
learned from master painter Yang O-shi in Taiwan for three years. The meditative strokes are my
connection to nature.
I incorporate Chinese brushwork into my own style of place, technique, and mounting. I collage my
Alaskan birds and flowers, painted on Xuan rice paper, with decorative paper, mounted on stretched
canvas, and sealed with acrylic gel medium to create an encaustic effect. My landscapes move from
large gestural strokes to layers of intentional brushwork of bold color that build depth.

Retirement has given me more time for projects and creating. This simpler life has also helped with the long healing process from post-concussion syndrome, a condition that slowly crept up on me. There has had to be much adaptation, but creating still remains the one thing that consistently centers me. Immersing into the visual has become an almost spiritual experience for me, one that helps to settle and focus my mind and soul, while providing a source of strength for those times when I feel that something is missing. Nothing seems to energize and center me as much as the process of developing an idea into a finished visual project. My current goal is to try even harder to achieve what needs to be done, and to use my creative process as a source of structure, organization and healing.

This is my view from the bluff as I awaken many dark, winter mornings. I Enjoy Painting with Acrylic on wood! The Wood grain Adds texture to the white cap waves. I also Love seeing the moon and know the ” moon sees me too”.

This is an outdoor sketch on a Sunny Afternoon. I looked through very clear water and felt I could see “under” the river. I used alcohol inks to add color because this medium is so translucent. I love the flow and control process alcohol ink provides.

Alcohol Ink gives the true feeling of a cold, windy, snowy day. It also captures the calmness and solitude of a brisk walk outdoors during winter. I feel alcohol ink captures simplicity and essence.

I used Alcohol ink to reveal my “Geode”. A Geode is a hollow rock formation with a cavity lined with colorful crystals. On the outside a Geode looks like any other rock, but when broken open, it is filled with crystals!

At the end of the growing season in Alaska, I gather the harvest and portray the produce in an alcohol ink painting. It fills my heart with fall colors. I also have dreams of delicious veggies to eat.

With Alcohol ink I dream of digging through the dummer garden area. I hope to find carrots, beets, and leafy greens still growing under the winter snow. I watch the Alaskan Wild Hare searching for food in my yard in the winter. I wonder if they have the same dream too?
